REPUBLICAN LANDSLIDE IN AMERICA (Friday Church News Notes, November 5, 2010, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143)

The U.S. mid-term election this week was historic. For Democrats, it was a devastating Perfect Storm. As the Detroit Free Press emblazoned on its front page, it was a “Landslide.” The Republicans took over the House of Representatives with a large majority. Prior to the election it was Democrat 256 to Republican 179, whereas afterward it was Republican 239 to Democrat 185 (with some seats still to be decided). At least 10 powerful senior House Democrats lost their jobs, including three committee chairs.

The new House leader, John Boehner [not yet confirmed!], in dramatic contrast to the former House leader Nancy Pelosi, vows to roll back Obama’s big spending and repeal the national health care boondoggle. Republicans also strengthened their presence in the U.S. Senate significantly, and in the 2012 election Republicans will only have to defend 10 Senate seats whereas the Democrats must defend at least 21.

At the state level, Republicans gained at least 10 governorships formerly held by Democrats, and they unseated about 650 Democrats to control more legislative seats than at any time since 1928. They took over both chambers of state legislatures in Alabama, Maine, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. They won control of houses of representatives in Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, with the vote still out in New York, Oregon, and Washington.

The Republicans are in control of both chambers in North Carolina and Alabama for the first time since just after the Civil War. The Democrats only gain in the entire 50 states was to pick up one seat in Delaware.

The new Republicans are also very conservative, even more so that the class of 1994 that swept Newt Gingrich into power as Speaker of the House. As John Gizzi of Human Events observed, “Overlooked by much of the liberal media so far is that this large class of Republican Members-elect will be one of the most conservative in modern times. ... with almost all calling for repeal of ‘Obamacare’ and quite a few of them campaigning on ‘red meat’ conservative issues such as abolishing the Department of Education or taking a fresh look at entitlements such as Medicare.”

THOUGHTS ON THE U.S. ELECTION (Friday Church News Notes, November 5, 2010, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143)

We observe, first, that Bible believers are thankful for the election results. At the very least it should slow the horrible flow of red ink and Obama’s socialist/globalist agenda. As I have often stated, politics are important because politics affect our lives, but--and this brings me to my second point, it is also necessary to understand that politics cannot “bring America back to God” because politics cannot address the foundational spiritual and moral issues. The most foundational problem in America is apostasy and compromise in the churches and the resulting judgment of God.

As in Israel of old, “from the prophets ... is profaneness gone forth into all the land” (Jeremiah 23:15). Americans do not fear God because the churches do not preach the fear of God, and no amount of politicking can change that.

I am confident that those who are laboring to strengthen the Bible convictions and spiritual depth of churches are doing more to help America than all of the “conservative politicking” that has been conducted over the past 40 years. The vast majority of the loudest “conservative” voices--the Glenn Becks and the Sean Hannitys and the Rush Limbaughs--do not have a clue about the foundational issues.

We would observe, thirdly, that though the Tea Party is acting like they now call the shots, they remain a minority in government and they are dreaming if they think they have actually taken control of America. As significant as this election was, the fact is that the country remains deeply divided and a large percentage of the people as well as their elected officials are opposed to the Tea Party agenda. We would observe, fourthly, that the American electorate is a very weak reed. The American people have proven themselves to be fickle and unwise, and what they give today they can easily take away tomorrow -- with no good reason. They elected Bill Clinton. Twice. Just two years ago they elected a near-Marxist, racist, America hater.

The average American voter is frightfully uneducated on the issues and susceptible to the lies of the liberal media. I want to say, fifthly, that there is great moral and spiritual danger in intensive politicking. It is dirty business. It is all about compromise and building coalitions and rubbing shoulders with those with whom we do not agree, whereas the Bible warns repeatedly that “evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33). I am not saying that God’s people should never get involved in politics.

Each individual must make that decision before the Lord and some good has come out of it; I am simply warning that there is danger in such involvement, and there are more important ways that one can spend his life for Christ. The best thing God’s people can do is to put Christ first, seek His perfect will, and pray fervently every day for the nation.

KING OBAMA
(Friday Church News Notes, November 5, 2010, www.wayoflife.org, fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143)

U.S. President Barak Obama is preparing for a trip to India fit for an ancient king. The cost per day for the royal couple Obama and Michele and their 3,000-member entourage is a mind-boggling $200 million a day (“US to spend $200 mn a day,” Press Trust of India, Nov. 2, 2010).

They have reserved an entire hotel, the exclusive Taj in Mumbai. This is only the latest in a continual series of hugely expensive trips for the royal couple, together and alone, with lots of friends in tow on the nation’s tab. What could motivate a U.S. president to spend such a massive amount of money on a trip to a third-rate country, or any country for that matter? It is simple.

The man is the king of the entitlement mentality. He deserves the royal treatment. Further, he an elitist. He thinks he is very, very special. Even Chris Matthews, a liberal political commentator who supports Obama’s big-spending socialism, called him an “elitist ... with teleprompter” in a recent appearance on the Andrea Mitchell show on MSNBC. Matthews said, “He hasn’t listened. He’s talked at us rather than with us. ... middle-aged people are losing their jobs ... and this guy’s out doing his pet projects. And they wonder why he isn’t their president, why he’s only his own president.” Indeed. He is King Obama.
