If it is one needed just one role-model for our children to emulate today, it would most certainly have to be Dr. Benjamin Carson, a contemporary who defeated the worst odds.
Raised in the poverty-stricken tenements of Detroit, where most just lived day-to-day, devoid of hope, Dr. Carson had one single overwhelming plus: his brave mother, who never gave up, and was determined her two children would rise above such squalor!
This morning, I was blessed to have sat with my first cup of coffee just as he, again, was being interviewed at Fox News! Sadly, I cannot find the interview, perhaps it being yet to be posted!
In any instance, I learned he will be retiring on June 30 of this year, from his position as a neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore, Maryland, although he will continue teaching, and, in his words, (I praraphrase) he has "some 10 lecture trips scheduled to as many countries, on the docket for this year alone!"
This was in response to being asked by Alisyn Camerota about a future in politics "I am not a Republican nor a Democrat. I am an Independent." (He had been asked the same by Hannity a couple of days ago, and is being brought back next week by him, to better explain his position on taxes and medical care.) Dr. Carson is distressed with what he claims to be "a 4th branch of government, the special-interests' group" which he mentioned at the National Prayer Breakfast, much to Obama's dismay!
Something that becomes very evident, is that he never fails to credit God for everything in his life, past and present. He is a very humble man, who is at odds with colleagues when it is he believes in the literal truth of the word of God, thus rejecting evolution!
He deplored that children lack being exposed to good role-models, of which there are many, he claims, who are just not known, such as found in the The Horatio Alger Society (and his own, I might add, Carson Scholars Fund | Discovering Promise ... Rewarding Excellence) and seemed to be annoyed at this fact! He is right! I had never heard of it!
What an impressive life he has led! How proud his mother must be, to have raised, in his words, "a brain surgeon and a rocket scientist," in referring also to his brother, an aeronautical engineer!
Doesn't that give one the goosebumps!...
